Experimental identification of two distinct skyrmion collapse mechanisms

Magnetic skyrmions are key candidates for applications in memory, logic and neuromorphic computing. An essential property is their topological protection that caused by the swirling spin texture described a robust integer winding number. However, this strictly enforced only continuum, so atomic lattice present all real materials leaves loophole switching Hence, understanding microscopic mechanism of unwinding crucial enhancing stability skyrmions. Here we use spin-polarized scanning tunnelling microscopy to locally probe skyrmion annihilation individual hot electrons. We tune collapse rate up four orders magnitude using an in-plane magnetic field, observe distinct transition maps either radial symmetric or exhibit excentric hotspot. compare these atomistic simulations based on parameters obtained from first-principles calculations find explained at zero field recently predicted chimera finite fields. These insights into transient state will enable future enhancement designs intentional switches.
